201 Power Systems Application 2.5-Day Training

Protection & Coordination



  • Review of fundamental considerations for protection, including data gathering, fault calculations, equipment damage and safety
  • Review of fault calculations and protective device evaluation
  • Overview of protection of apparatus including conductors, transformers, motors and generators
  • Coordination of Overcurrent Protection Devices
  • Discuss compliance with various codes and standards including ANSI, NEMA, NEC® and CEC
  • Provide practical examples of overcurrent coordination, including the understanding of protection versus coordination and continuity of service for both phase and ground overcurrent
  • Presentation of several class examples that will help students gain a basic understanding of how to select and apply conductors, fuses, low and medium voltage circuit breakers, overcurrent relays and current transformers
  • Discuss issues and examine study results, potential problem areas and implementation of study recommendations

Course Description:

The course involves the application of the Power*Tools program to analyze a sample electrical distribution system. This training program explains the rules and techniques of coordinating protective relays, power fuses and circuit breakers. Practical exercises of distribution system protection and coordination will be reviewed and then performed using the software.

When preparing arc flash analysis, it is vitally important to perform accurate short circuit, protection and coordination studies. This course will provide the background and understanding required to perform these studies. Students will earn 2.0 CEUs for this 3-day course.

Hands-On Lab - Analysis of a Sample Electrical Distribution System in PTW:

  • Design a new power system and analyze an existing system with expert guidance.
  • Proper equipment selection for coordination and evaluation of the design - why certain devices should be used instead of others
  • Relay coordination, differential & ZSI application examples, Ground Fault protection schemes
  • Emergency Power System Design - coordination of critical systems fed by generators, UPS, and inverter systems.
  • Apparatus Protection - Transformers, Conductors, and Overload conditions
  • Discussion of common coordination issues, errors, and misconceptions. Rules of thumb to quickly spot uncoordinated systems
  • Develop guidelines to clarify possible coordination confusions
  • Interpretation of Equipment datasheets
  • Relationship between Short Circuit results and Protective Device Coordination study
  • Discussion of study results and methods to improve system protection and coordination
  • Discussion of issues related to Selective Coordination and compliance with related codes and standards

Target Audience:

This course is intended for electric power engineers responsible for the design and analysis of three phase electrical distribution systems. No previous electrical distribution system analysis experience is required. However, it is HIGHLY recommended that courses 101 and 102 have been previously completed or have several years of PTW experience.

Training Equipment SKM will provide a computer with the software installed for the Torrance location only when requested. However, students are highly encouraged to bring their own laptop computers. SKM will provide the latest version of the PTW software prior to the class for installation. License key will be provided on the first day of the course.
