  • 101 Intro 1 to SKM Power*Tools 3-Day Training or Basic working knowledge of the SKM PTW Software
  • Basic computer skills

Course Description:

This is a brand new course for 2017 and focuses on 3 areas of the software where the analysis is becoming more commonplace in the power industry and to help protection engineers be more efficient with the new time saving Coordination Evaluation module.  Students will earn 1.6 CEUs for this course.

Cable Ampacity:

  • Review of software interface and navigation.
  • Creating underground duct banks and in-air installations.
  • Use of and creating library models for physical cables and ducts.
  • Result interpretation.

Coordination Evaluation:

  • Overview of rules implemented in Power*Tools, including NEC and recommended industry standard practices.
  • Example practice project demonstrating issues and resolution process.
  • Review of software interface. All vs Selected equipment list. 
  • Interpreting results (pass/fail/warning) and Evaluation Notes
  • Dynamic TCC generation
  • Report printing


DC Systems with Arc Flash Evaluation:

  • IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E standards, NEC and OSHA requirements
  • IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E Calculation Procedures
  • Relationship with Short Circuit and Protective Device Coordination studies
  • Arc Flash Labeling Requirements, Personal Protection Equipment
  • Custom Labels and Work Permits
  • Examples and interpretation of PTW Arc Flash results


Target Audience:

This course is intended for electric power engineers responsible for the design and analysis of three phase and DC electrical distribution systems.  No previous electrical distribution system analysis experience is required.

Course Fees $895 for Intermediate Topics 1 in SKM Power*Tools 2-Day Training. Does not include hotel or travel costs.

Registration Fees Include 1 Training Manual, Continental breakfast each day from 7 to 7:30 AM, On-site lunches each day, Group dinner on Monday after the class (Torrance, CA only), and an IEEE Certificate of Completion.
Training Equipment SKM will provide a computer with the software installed for the Torrance location only when requested. However, students are highly encouraged to bring their own laptop computers. SKM will provide the latest version of the PTW software prior to the class for installation. License key will be provided on the first day of the course.
Course Location The Torrance DoubleTree Hotel at South Bay address is 21333 Hawthorne Blvd. Torrance, CA 90503 and is located 10 miles South of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Airport transportation is approximately $30 for a taxi or $15 for SuperShuttle. The hotel is also conveniently located 2.5 miles east of the beach and the Redondo Pier. Restaurants and shops are within walking distance from the hotel. Parking and wireless internet usage at the hotel is complimentary.
